Terry Smith to stay with Penn State football, according to multiple reports

Interim head coach Terry Smith will continue his tenure with Penn State football, joining Matt Campbells staff, multiple sources indicate. Smith took over as interim coach on October 12 following the dismissal of James Franklin after a three-game losing streak.

On December 5, reports emerged that Penn State is finalizing an eight-year contract to hire Iowa States Matt Campbell, pending approval from the Board of Trustees. Details regarding Smiths exact position on the new staff have not been disclosed, though he previously served as cornerbacks coach, associate head coach, and assistant head coach under Franklin.

ESPNs Pete Thamel reported that Smith has signed a four-year deal to remain at his alma mater. During his interim tenure, Smith compiled a 3-3 record, including a three-game winning streak that secured bowl eligibility and ended a six-game losing streakthe longest in program history since 2024. Penn State players publicly supported Smith, displaying signs and chanting in his favor after the victory over Nebraska.

Reflecting on the Nebraska win, Smith said, I love Penn State. I would be open to any possibilities of staying here.

Smith initially joined Penn State in 2014 as defensive recruiting coordinator and cornerbacks coach after a season at Temple. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2016 and became associate head coach in 2021, while continuing to oversee defensive recruiting and cornerbacks coaching. He is recognized for mentoring 12 NFL cornerbacks, including first-round pick Joey Porter Jr.

An Aliquippa native, Smith played three seasons as a starter for Joe Paternos Nittany Lions and graduated in 1991. He ranks 12th in career receiving touchdowns for Penn State with 15 and amassed over 1,800 receiving yards. Smith was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 11th round of the 1992 NFL Draft and also spent time in the Canadian Football League and Arena League.
