TSA introduces $45 fee for travelers lacking REAL ID

Starting February, U.S. travelers flying without a REAL ID will be required to pay a $45 fee, following a new option rolled out by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for passengers lacking proper identification. This new system, called "Confirm.ID," will allow travelers to verify their identity at airport security checkpoints and is valid for a 10-day travel period.

The requirement for using REAL ID-compliant licenses or a U.S. passport for domestic flights began in May 2025. TSA reports that 94% of travelers already possess a REAL ID or other approved identification.

Previously, travelers without REAL ID were subject to extra security screening. Under the new Confirm.ID program, the process will incur a $45 fee and may result in longer wait times at checkpoints. TSA has noted that processing times will differ depending on the airport and is working on implementing online payment options for the service.

REAL ID is a federal standard for state-issued IDs established over 20 years ago to enhance security at airports and federal facilities. Compliant licenses and ID cards display a star, either gold or black, at the top.

Adam Stahl, Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator for TSA, explained that while most travelers already carry acceptable identification, the fee ensures that the cost of verifying those without proper ID is borne by the traveler rather than taxpayers.
