Although Black-owned businesses remain relatively rare in Southern Californias Orange County, a mix of community backing, relocation trends, and local advocacy is helping those that exist to flourish. Black residents account for only about 1.7% of the countys populationaround 54,000 peoplebut in cities like Irvine, the impact of Black entrepreneurs is increasingly visible and influential.
From vibrant soul food spots to Orange Countys sole Black-owned wine cellar, these business owners are creating spaces that resonate with the local community. Lyndas African Delicacies is a prime example. Located in the Airport Business Center, this African eatery often sees long lines as locals flock to experience its authentic dishes. Founded by Lynda Umaru, who initially ran a successful hair-braiding and beauty business, the restaurant has expanded rapidly thanks to community support and viral attention on social media platforms like TikTok.
A native of Nigeria, Umaru moved to Irvine in 2005 and started her hair-braiding business after choosing to stay home with her first child. While serving clients, she discovered a strong interest in her homemade meals. This realization led her to open a restaurant, and her ventures quickly grewfrom a 1,200-square-foot salon to a 5,000-square-foot combined braiding salon and beauty supply store, just steps from her restaurant.
Originally a food truck in 2019, Lyndas African Delicacies moved into a brick-and-mortar location in November 2024 due to overwhelming demand. Umaru is now planning to expand the restaurant further to accommodate more diners. She emphasizes the universal appeal of her food: customers of all backgrounds enjoy her Nigerian dishes, demonstrating that good food transcends cultural boundaries.
With both her restaurant and beauty business thriving, Umaru celebrates African culture in Orange County while catering to a diverse clientele. She explains that community engagement and authentic ingredientssourced primarily from Nigeriahave been key to her success.
The growth of Black-owned businesses in the region has also been supported by the Black Chamber of Orange County, which has advocated for entrepreneurs, education, and veterans for over 40 years. The Chamber works to provide resources and guidance, helping ensure these businesses have the tools to succeed in Orange Countys business landscape.
Another notable business is Georgias Restaurant, the only soul food establishment in Irvine Spectrum Center. Founded by Gretchen Shoemaker, the restaurant serves classics like fried chicken, jambalaya, gumbo, and cornbread, reflecting her childhood cooking experiences. With four locations across Southern California, Georgias exemplifies the increasing visibility and community support for Black-owned businesses in the area.
Meanwhile, McClain Cellars stands out as the countys only Black-owned wine cellar. Founded by Jason and Sofia McClain, the couple transformed their passion for wine into a thriving business. After years in the tech industry, Jason sought a more personal venture, and in 2016, the couple launched their winery in Irvine. McClain Cellars offers award-winning wines, a unique wine-blending experience, and a welcoming space for the community.
The McClains also celebrate African American history through their Black Heroes Collection, a wine series honoring icons like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Marian Anderson. Their success highlights the opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs in Orange County and demonstrates how inclusive community support can lead to thriving businesses.
Both Lyndas African Delicacies and McClain Cellars exemplify how Black business owners are contributing to Orange Countys evolving and inclusive business environment, proving that creativity, quality, and community engagement can break barriers and drive success.
