Brian Cole's Family Issues Brief Statement Following Pipe Bomb Arrest

Brian Cole Jr., 30, from Woodbridge, Virginia, has been identified by federal authorities as the suspect in the recent pipe bomb incidents in Washington, D.C. National news outlets, including CNN and NBC, reported on his alleged involvement, confirming that Cole is accused of placing undetonated pipe bombs near political offices.

In response to the arrest, Cole's family issued brief statements to the media. His grandmother, Loretta, described him as socially challenged and naive, insisting he would not intentionally harm anyone. She noted his previous work at the family-run bail bonds business, "Brian Cole Bail Bonds," as well as a stint with DoorDash. She expressed disbelief over the allegations, emphasizing that Cole has no known connections to Washington, D.C.

Cole's step-grandfather, Earl Donnette, confirmed he had spoken with the FBI but declined further comment. Coles father also chose not to comment. Neighbors described Cole as highly antisocial, preferring to keep to himself.

Brian Cole Jr. grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia, graduating from a local high school in 2013. His hometown is approximately 23 miles from Washington, D.C. Authorities quickly responded to his neighborhood after the news of his identification, examining his home and surrounding areas, with some personnel in hazmat suits conducting inspections.

While some reports suggest Cole may have had anarchist inclinations, these claims remain unverified. The FBI released photos and surveillance videos of the suspect, noting that he had evaded identification for several years. The bombs were placed near the Democratic and Republican National Committee offices on January 5, 2021, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. EST. The FBI is seeking public tips and has offered a reward of up to $500,000.

Investigators built their case using banking and purchase records. Documents indicate Cole bought materials consistent with those used in the pipe bombs from multiple locations in Northern Virginia. Surveillance and license plate data also reportedly placed him near the crime scenes on the evening of January 5, 2021.

The FBI previously shared details about the suspect's appearance and clothing, including his approximate height of five foot seven, a gray hoodie, black gloves, and distinctive Nike Air Max shoes. Officials emphasized that the devices were fully functional and posed a serious risk of injury or death. The bombs were strategically located near political offices: one behind the Republican National Committee and another near a park bench by the Democratic National Committee.

Authorities continue to investigate the case as the public and local community remain on alert.
