A Portland father reacted immediately when he saw a coyote bite his child's foot. The incident occurred in October, according to reports, while two children, aged 3 and 9, were playing in their backyard. The coyote targeted the older child, causing minor injuries, while the younger child was unharmed.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) noted that the 9-year-old was wearing only socks at the time. The child managed to shake free and escape the animal's grasp.

During the attack, the father shouted from the porch, prompting the coyote to flee. The injured child was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Two weeks later, ODFW confirmed that the coyote had been captured and humanely euthanized, with assistance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlifes Wildlife Forensics Lab.

Concerns About Human-Wildlife Interactions

Encounters between humans and wildlife are becoming more common as animals lose natural habitats due to urban development and environmental changes. Coyotes, like the one involved in this case, are forced to move closer to human dwellings. Experts warn that killing individual animals may not be an effective long-term solution. Research published in Ecography indicates that sporadic hunting of coyotes can sometimes lead to population increases, raising the risk of further human-wildlife conflicts and affecting ecosystem balance.

Safety Recommendations

ODFW advises residents, especially those in the Alameda neighborhood, to keep a close watch on young children playing outside. Effective measures include scaring away coyotes by yelling, using airhorns, banging pots, or throwing objects, and promptly removing anything that might attract wildlife.

Additional precautions involve keeping pets secure, avoiding contact with wild animals, and eliminating potential food sources to prevent unintentional encounters.
