Luigi Mangione's Family: Information on the Alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooter's Parents and Siblings

Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, hailed from a well-known Maryland family but had been living separately from them at the time of the incident.

Born in May 1998, Mangione grew up near Baltimore in a family with notable achievements. His late grandfather was a self-made multimillionaire real estate developer, and his cousin Nino Mangione serves as a Maryland House of Delegates member. Mangione attended the prestigious Gilman School for boys, graduating as valedictorian in 2016, and later earned an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.

After college, Mangione moved to Hawaii and gradually became estranged from his family around mid-2024. On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson was shot outside a Manhattan hotel. Mangione was identified as the primary suspect and arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Following his arrest, his cousin Nino released a family statement expressing shock and devastation, while offering prayers for Thompsons family.

Immediate Family

Mangione has two sisters, MariaSanta and Luciana. MariaSanta is a physician at the University of Texas Southwestern, while Luciana is a visual artist who emphasized the importance of family in interviews. On the day of Mangione's arrest, Luciana shared a now-deleted Instagram post expressing her prayers for him.

Extended Family and Legacy

The Mangione family has long-standing prominence in Maryland. Luigis grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., made his fortune in real estate and purchased country clubs such as Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City and later Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley. The family also owned conservative-leaning radio station WCBM, while Luigis father, Louis Mangione, became an owner of Lorien Health Services and managed Mangione Family Enterprises.

Mangiones grandmother, Mary, who passed away in 2023 due to Parkinsons complications, was known for her philanthropic efforts and left a conditional inheritance, excluding any grandchild facing felony charges.

Estrangement and Personal Struggles

Following back surgery in 2023, Mangiones communication with friends and family became sporadic. Former classmates and acquaintances reported difficulty reaching him, noting that his back issues had affected his mobility. His mother reportedly filed a missing person report in November 2024 after noticing troubling behavior.

Legal Proceedings

Nearly a year after the incident, Mangione appeared at a pre-trial hearing in New York City on December 1, 2025. He faces nine state-level felony charges, including second-degree murder, and is also charged with federal terrorism. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Despite his familys prominence and past successes, Mangiones recent actions have brought intense media attention and public scrutiny to both him and his relatives.
