Bethlehem welcomes back Christmas celebrations, kicks off with tree lighting

In Bethlehem, the iconic Christmas tree has been erected and preparations are underway around the clock as the city gears up to welcome visitors for the holiday season. Deputy Mayor Lucy Talgieh highlighted the effort, saying, "The tree is already set up and staff are working tirelessly day and night to get ready for Christmas. After years of COVID restrictions and conflict, we are eager to celebrate."

Following consultations with Palestinian authorities, city officials confirmed that shops and hotels will reopen for Christmas, with intentions to keep them operational beyond the holiday period. This marks a shift from last year, when ongoing unrest in Gaza limited festivities to religious ceremonies, leaving public decorations and celebrations absent. Previous years were similarly restrained due to the prolonged conflict.

"We need to honor this place," expressed a local resident attending the event, noting it was their first opportunity to celebrate after years of hardship, unemployment, and sorrow. "Now is the moment to share our happiness and joy."

Hope Amid Challenges

Since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in October 2023, Bethlehem has faced rising unemployment, as tens of thousands of Palestinian workers from the West Bank were prevented from entering Israel and nearby settlements. Once-busy markets and popular squares are still quieter than in previous years. Nevertheless, Talgieh anticipates welcoming approximately 11,000 visitors during Christmas week, offering a glimmer of hope for a more joyful holiday season.
