Man's Cause of Death Revealed After Leaving Dog Behind in Running Truck for Months

Authorities have determined how 34-year-old Paul Aragon died after his body was discovered months following his disappearance, during which he left his dog inside a running vehicle.

Aragon was reported missing on May 8 by the Broomfield Police Department. His truck had been found in Broomfield, Colorado, with the engine still on and his dog inside, according to the Boulder County Sheriffs Office. At the time, Aragon was reportedly working in the Littleton or Lakewood area and living in his truck.

Police first found the vehicle on May 2 around 3:15 a.m. in a construction zone near a hotel on Edgeview Drive. Officers noted the trucks engine was running, lights were on, and the dog was present inside. Searches of the surrounding area, including the use of a department drone, did not locate Aragon. Attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful, and he was not registered as a hotel guest.

On May 3, the truck remained in place with the dog still inside. Concerned for the animals safety, authorities placed the dog in a local shelter while continuing the search for Aragon. Five days later, Aragons mother reported him missing after being informed that his dog had been found. She stated that she had last heard from him around April 28 or 29, and he had missed work on May 5.

Three months later, on August 25, Aragons body was recovered from Coal Creek near State Highway 93 and State Highway 128. An investigation followed, including assessments of potential travel routes and interviews with family, friends, and associates.

The Boulder County Sheriffs Office confirmed that Aragon died from drowning, and the death was ruled accidental. Officials stated there was no evidence of criminal activity related to his death, and no further updates are expected.

Family members expressed relief and sorrow at the discovery. Pauls father described the difficulty of informing his 13-year-old daughter about the loss. A candlelight vigil was held in September to honor Aragons memory. His sister, Jonise Aragon, emphasized the importance of remembering his spirit while seeking closure for the family.
