Pistorius: Arrow 3 boosts German and European air defense

Germany, along with its allies, is set to significantly boost its air defence capabilities as the first components of the Arrow 3 missile defence system become operational, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced in Berlin.

"For the first time, we will have the ability to provide early warning and protection for our citizens and critical infrastructure against long-range ballistic threats," Pistorius stated. "This strategic capability, unmatched by any other European partner, positions Germany at the center of European security."

The German Air Force plans to declare the system's initial operational readiness on Wednesday at the Schnewalde/Holzdorf air base, located roughly 80 kilometres south of Berlin. The military confirmed that the first elements including radar systems, missile launchers, and trained personnel are now active and ready for limited protective operations.

"This capability allows us to safeguard not only Germany but also our allies. It strengthens NATO's presence in Europe and meets key NATO planning objectives," Pistorius explained, emphasizing Germanys commitment to shared defence responsibilities.

The minister expressed gratitude to the Israeli and US partners who collaborated on the system's development, as well as to the soldiers and civilian staff involved in its deployment. He highlighted that the contract for the Arrow 3 system was signed just two years ago.

Once fully operational, the system will enable Germany to detect and intercept ballistic missiles in space, marking a significant advancement in national and allied defence capabilities.
