Devon and Cornwall Police have welcomed two 13-week-old Rottweiler puppies, named Ronnie and Reggie, inspired by the infamous London gangsters, the Kray twins. The young dogs are currently undergoing training to become versatile police dogs.
Paul Glennon, a canine development officer, explained that the Rottweilers are intended to complement the force's German Shepherds. He noted that these puppies could be the first of their breed to serve in a UK police force, although Rottweilers are already employed by German police units.
Ive researched this breed extensively and Im optimistic about their potential, Glennon said. Unlike their namesakes, these dogs will be helping to catch criminals rather than committing crimes.
The puppies will spend approximately 14 months with puppy walkers before moving on to a three-month intensive course with their official handlers. If successful, they are expected to serve as police dogs until around eight years of age.
Glennon highlighted the rationale behind introducing Rottweilers: German Shepherds remain our primary choice, but they often face health issues. By exploring alternative breeds, we can ensure a healthy, capable workforce.
The force has previously had success with giant schnauzers, and early signs from Ronnie suggest strong tracking abilities. Devon and Cornwall Police currently maintain 35 general-purpose dogs along with a variety of specialist canines.
The puppy walkers described Reggie as playful but endearing, showing both charm and spirited behavior during training.
