Russian attacks on Ukraine lead to disruptions in heating and water supply

Drone and missile attacks by Russia on Ukraine have struck vital infrastructure, including energy facilities and rail lines, leading to heating and water service disruptions affecting thousands of households, Ukrainian officials reported on Saturday.

The latest round of aerial assaults, occurring from Friday night into Saturday, coincided with Ukrainian negotiators meeting U.S. officials in Florida for a third consecutive day to discuss the American-proposed plan to end nearly four years of conflict.

Ukraines Air Force stated that Russia deployed 653 drones and 51 missiles during the strikes. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized on social media that "energy facilities were once again the primary targets," adding that "Russias goal is to cause suffering for millions of Ukrainians."

Energy sites in the Chernigiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were hit, according to Ukrainian authorities. In the Odesa region, Restoration Minister Oleksiy Kuleba reported that approximately 9,500 households remain without heating, and 34,000 lack water due to the damage.

A Russian drone attack also destroyed the main railway station in Fastiv, located about 70 kilometers southwest of Kyiv, Zelensky said. While there were no casualties, the state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsya confirmed that suburban train operations were disrupted.

Following the attacks, an emergency meeting of Ukrainian ministers was held, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated. She noted that "additional rolling power outages will be necessary nationwide" to stabilize the system as repairs are underway.

The strikes also had cross-border effects. Moldovas national energy company, Moldelectrica, reported that attacks on Ukraines energy grid caused critical interconnection lines to approach their limits. The provider requested emergency support from Romania and advised citizens to use electricity prudently.

Despite international efforts to resolve the conflict, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraines energy and heating infrastructure, damaging essential civilian systems. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the operations focused on "Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises and associated energy facilities," asserting that all intended targets were hit.
