A charity-operated youth centre in Barnsley is scheduled to open its doors in early 2026. The two-storey Base71, located on Schwbisch Gmnd Way opposite the towns train station, will officially start welcoming young people on 17 January.
The centre will cater to children and teens aged 8 to 18, as well as up to 25 for those with additional needs. Facilities will include an indoor climbing wall, sports courts, a rooftop football pitch, gym, recording studio, and creative workshop spaces.
Built at a cost of 9.2 million by the charity OnSide, Base71 is expected to create up to 70 jobs and serve around 4,000 young people annually. Barnsley Council has contributed 150,000 to cover membership fees for the first year, after which an annual membership will cost 5. Four-hour activity sessions are priced at 50p, and a hot meal is available for 1.
Mandy Carlson, Base71s chief executive, commented: "This centre will give young people a place to escape isolation, explore new interests, and think about their future goals."
Gareth Webb, marketing and communications manager, added: "There are limited affordable activities for young people in Barnsley. Base71 aims to provide a safe, welcoming environment that families can access without financial strain."
Each session will feature 20 different activities, giving young people a variety of options to engage in. Previous youth hubs managed by OnSide have seen nightly attendances of around 200 participants, demonstrating strong community interest.
Holly Hodgson, philanthropy and partnerships manager, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to channel their energy creatively and positively when life feels hectic."
