Harper Martinez, 13, enjoys playing in the snow with her young dog, Franky, on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, in South Bend, Indiana. Meanwhile, Jonathan Hausman sleds down a hill at the Iowa State Supreme Court building on the same day. In Louisville, Megan Brake takes a stroll with her Labradoodle, Nym, along snow-covered sidewalks at Audubon Park on Tuesday, Dec. 2, following an early winter storm that left several inches of wet snow.

Residents in many states across the U.S. woke up Tuesday, Dec. 2, to fresh snow accumulation, with more expected. According to the National Weather Service, the season's first significant winter storm is intensifying as it moves toward New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

Forecasters report a mix of snow and other wintry precipitation spreading eastward from the Ohio Valley into the central and southern Appalachians, as well as parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Snow showers continue from the Upper Ohio Valley through the Lower Great Lakes, moving east into interior New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

The storm is predicted to produce heavy snow in interior New England and northern Mid-Atlantic areas, with rates potentially exceeding an inch per hour. Total snowfall could range from 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts surpassing a foot. Freezing rain is possible in the central and southern Appalachians, creating icy and hazardous conditions on roads.

Scenes of recent snowfall show the impact of this winter weather across the country. At Ohio State University, people walked through snow-covered Mirror Lake and the Oval after several inches fell early Tuesday morning. In Des Moines, Iowa, Elizabeth, Louisa, and William Sayre went sledding at Waveland Golf Course on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025. Keiva Delaney cleared snow from a sidewalk on Hodge Avenue, while a cyclist braved the snowy Wilson Avenue in Ames, Iowa, on the same day.

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Wayne Kapke walked his dog, Oliver, in Copernicus Park during a winter storm that was expected to drop 8 to 12 inches of snow in southern parts of the state. Lake-effect snow created slow traffic on Oriskany Street in Utica, New York, on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025.

Across the U.S., communities continue to experience the beauty and challenges of early winter snowfall.
