'We seek security, not territory': Israeli Ambassador to US urges cooperation in speech to Lebanese

Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, expressed hope that 2026 could mark a new chapter of peace in the region, potentially dubbed Abraham Accords 2.0. In an interview with This is Beirut, Leiter emphasized that disarming Hezbollah and reducing Lebanon's ties with Iran could pave the way for stability, economic growth, and mutual opportunities between the two nations.

Addressing Lebanese citizens directly, he stated: We seek to live alongside you in peace and security. Our interest is not in your territory, but in ensuring our own safety. Like you, we wish to live free from threats and violence. He added that Israel is committed to pursuing peace while safeguarding its population, envisioning a harmonious relationship between Israelis and Lebanese.

Leiter also highlighted the shared cultural and regional connections between the two peoples and suggested that a future without foreign interference, such as Iran's influence, could allow both countries to enjoy stability and prosperity. Imagine a nation without war, without turmoil, and without foreign powers undermining your peace. In such a scenario, Israelis could visit Beirut, and Lebanese could travel to Jerusalem, fostering mutual understanding and friendship, he said.

Reflecting on previous statements, Leiter had indicated that Syria and Lebanon might join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel, potentially even before Saudi Arabia. He argued that there is no obstacle to establishing peaceful relations with these neighboring countries.

Leiter's remarks have sparked significant attention, and he has faced formal inquiries regarding his comments on Lebanon, Syria, and Israels internal politics, underlining the sensitive nature of regional diplomacy and public statements by senior officials.
