Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky described a recent phone conversation with US peace envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as "highly constructive." The discussion focused on ways to ensure Russia complies with any prospective agreement to halt the conflict in Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized his commitment to continuing collaboration with the United States.
Ukrainian representatives participating from Miami joined the call as US-led negotiations entered their third day, aimed at crafting a potential peace framework. Despite these talks, Moscow has not indicated any concessions and continues large-scale military strikes against Ukrainian targets.
"Ukraine remains committed to working in good faith with the US to genuinely achieve peace," Zelensky wrote on X. "We explored critical elements that could stop the bloodshed and prevent another large-scale Russian invasion."
Russia carried out additional missile and air strikes overnight, drawing strong criticism from EU allies. French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed his support to Zelensky, affirming France's intent to collaborate with partners to enforce de-escalation measures and a ceasefire. Macron also confirmed that he will join Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for discussions in London on Monday.
The four leaders will address ongoing US-Ukrainian talks focused on post-war security guarantees for Ukraine. Their previous virtual meeting discussed the possible deployment of a European peacekeeping force in the event of a ceasefire. Starmer has emphasized Ukraine's right to determine its own future and described the coalition's peacekeeping initiative as essential for ensuring national security.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the concept of an international force, warning that any deployed troops would be considered "legitimate targets." Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched 653 drones and 51 missiles on Friday night, including a strike on the Fastiv railway hub southwest of Kyiv, which destroyed the main station and damaged trains. Energy facilities in eight regions were also hit, causing widespread power outages. Russia stated the targets included military-industrial, energy, and port infrastructure.
US and Ukrainian negotiators urged Russia to demonstrate a genuine commitment to lasting peace after recent talks in Moscow ended without results. Concurrently, negotiations in Florida continue, aiming to encourage Ukraine to consider a US-backed peace initiative. Witkoff described two days of meetings with Rustem Umerov, Ukraines National Security Council secretary, as "constructive," noting that both sides discussed security arrangements and deterrence measures to sustain a durable peace, while stressing that progress depends on Russias willingness to reduce hostilities.
