A significant recall has been initiated for shredded cheese sold under multiple well-known grocery store labels after the manufacturer warned that tiny metal fragments might be present in the product, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall affects over 250,000 cases of shredded cheese produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. The FDA noted that the removal of these products from store shelves began on October 3 and the recall is still in effect.
The cheese was distributed under private-label brands including Good & Gather, Happy Farms, Great Value, Hill Country, and others. Major retailers impacted include Target, Aldi, Walmart, Sprouts, Publix, and H-E-B, a Texas-based chain.
The FDA has categorized this as a Class II recall, indicating that while the products could lead to temporary or reversible health issues, the risk of severe injury is considered low. The concern arises from potential metal fragments originating from the raw ingredients supplied to the manufacturer.
Products were shipped to over 30 states, including Alabama, California, Florida, Kansas, Minnesota, New York, New Mexico, and Wisconsin, as well as Puerto Rico.
Great Lakes Cheese Co. has not released a public statement regarding the recall and has not responded to inquiries for comment.
