A recall has been issued for over 260,000 cases of shredded cheese distributed across 31 states and Puerto Rico due to potential contamination with metal fragments, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected products, which include various types of shredded cheeses, were recalled by Great Lakes Cheese Co. These cheeses are sold under private store brands at several major retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Aldi.
The recall covers a range of cheese varieties, including mozzarella, Italian style, pizza style, mozzarella and provolone, and mozzarella and parmesan.
This recall has been classified as Class II by the FDA, indicating that the affected products "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." According to the FDA's official website, the ingestion of metal fragments could lead to injuries such as dental damage, cuts or lacerations to the mouth or throat, or damage to the intestines, including lacerations or perforations.
