Former Steelers standout James Harrison speaks out against Mike Tomlin: 'Action needs to be taken'

The early optimism surrounding Coach Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers has taken a worrying turn, highlighted by a humiliating 26-7 defeat to the Buffalo Bills at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday.

The Steelers had begun the season 5-1, with the addition of Aaron Rodgers in the offseason initially hailed as a masterstroke. However, weaknesses began to surface, and the team has now dropped five of its last seven games, prompting linebacker TJ Watt to issue a warning.

During this challenging period, Steelers icon James Harrison voiced strong criticism of Tomlin. I never considered Coach Tomlin a great coach; I thought he was good, Harrison stated on the Deebo & Joe podcast. Honestly, part of that stems from when I was set to be the starter after Joey Porter left, and he drafted two outside linebackers.

Harrison, who earned two Super Bowl rings with Pittsburgh, also criticized the coaching staff as a whole, suggesting that players are not being supported to reach their highest potential. He hinted that it may be time for the franchise to move on from Tomlin, who has led the team for 19 years.

Something has to be done. I know the Steelers usually stick with their coaches, but perhaps its time to make a change, Harrison added. He became a four-time All-Pro under Tomlins leadership.

Tomlin has faced growing scrutiny in recent years as the Steelers continue to underperform, having not reached the divisional round of the playoffs since 2017.
