Lucy Liu has spoken out about the persistent racial prejudices in Hollywood that, according to her, caused a strange lull in her career after her early breakthroughs in film and television. In a recent conversation about her latest dramatic project, Rosemead, the acclaimed actress reflected on the systemic obstacles that limited her opportunities for years.
Despite her appearances in high-profile films and shows such as Charlies Angels, Kill Bill, and Ally McBeal, Liu said she was often offered roles she described as side salad roles, which she felt did not challenge her or fully utilize her abilities.
Liu recounted the challenges she faced in bringing Rosemead to life, explaining that it required the support of 16 different investors and that distributors questioned the films commercial potential. She described this film as her first substantial dramatic lead in over thirty years in the industry.
The actress also highlighted the uneven scrutiny faced by Asian performers. She referenced criticism she received for her role as an assassin in Kill Bill (2003), noting that her non-Asian co-stars did not encounter similar accusations. Liu emphasized that her career trajectory was heavily influenced by racial perceptions, suggesting that if she had looked Caucasian, she might have been offered more diverse opportunities.
Her statements shed light on the ongoing challenges Asian actors face in Hollywood, and Lius experience underscores the broader conversation about representation and equity in the entertainment industry.
