Intense Competition: Actor clarifies Scott Hunter is not really timing Shane

Franois Arnaud appears in the initial two episodes of Heated Rivalry portraying Scott Hunter a character who, despite leading Rachel Reid's first novel Game Changer, plays a supporting role in the Crave original series streaming on HBO Max. Under showrunner Jacob Tierney, the show centers primarily on the romance between Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). However, the third episode, titled "Hunter," diverges to highlight Scott's relationship with Kip Grady (Robbie G.K.).

This episode honors the original book that launched the series, focusing on pro hockey players navigating closeted lives, while also demonstrating the difficulties athletes face in publicly embracing their sexuality. In a discussion with Out, Arnaud reflects on his initial impressions of the scripts, his approach to portraying a bisexual character, and the collaborative experience with Tierney and his co-stars.

Arnaud explains that he joined the series shortly before filming, describing his long-standing friendship with Tierney and admiration for his work. He initially felt uncertain about the role, but Tierneys vision and the complexity of Scotts story convinced him to take part. He emphasizes that Episode 3 depicts the harsh realities athletes face when coming out, portraying longing, flirtation, and love, but ending without a traditional happy resolution.

Regarding Scotts emotional journey, Arnaud compares it to a bittersweet romantic comedy. Scott is emotionally open but not yet prepared to risk his career for personal authenticity. The episode explores a pivotal moment when Kip enters his life, offering hope and joy amidst the challenges of secrecy and societal pressures.

The storyline also parallels real-world events, such as the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, where anti-LGBTQ+ laws influenced athletes decisions to come out. Arnaud highlights the persistent pressures within team sports and locker room culture, reflecting on how language and societal norms shape attitudes toward homosexuality and misogyny.

Arnaud, an openly bisexual actor, notes the importance of representation while asserting the right to privacy. He stresses that sexual orientation should not restrict casting opportunities and applauds the increasing diversity in roles for LGBTQ+ actors.

Discussing on-screen chemistry, Arnaud praises Williams, Storrie, and G.K. for their talent and natural performances. He explains that Scotts story can inspire and serve as a cautionary example for others, contrasting the experiences of younger closeted characters in the show with Scotts more seasoned, hidden life.

Finally, Arnaud addresses a popular fan misconception: Scotts reactions to Shane and Ilyas interactions are not flirtatious or romantic. He clarifies that the expressions fans have interpreted as clocking are simply intuitive observations, reflecting curiosity rather than attraction.

Heated Rivalry is available for streaming on HBO Max.
