Jessie J reveals reason for hugging Kate Middleton against advice

Jessie J has opened up about the moment she embraced Kate Middleton at the Royal Variety Performance, explaining why she chose to ignore royal protocol. The singer, born Jessica Cornish, performed at the Royal Albert Hall, where the Princess of Wales and Prince William also watched performances by the West End cast of Paddington The Musical and singer Laufey.

After the show, Cornish and Middleton shared a heartfelt hug as they connected over their experiences with cancer. In November, Jessie J mentioned that during the hug, they acknowledged how challenging it is to face cancer in the public eye.

Speaking on a recent episode of This Morning, Cornish revealed that she had been advised not to hug Kate. "I just saw a mom that has also gone through cancer publicly, and I just wanted to give her a hug," she said. "It was as simple as that. I didnt see her as the Princess of Wales, though I was obviously respectful."

She added, "I asked, Can I give you a hug? and she welcomed it. I told her, It's inspiring. I know the challenges she has faced, and I just wanted to connect, mom to mom, human to human."

Kate Middleton was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in March 2024 and underwent a nine-month treatment including preventative chemotherapy. In January, she announced she was officially in remission and shared the news alongside a surprise visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she received treatment. She has also spoken about how her diagnosis affected her family, including her three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

"Its a life-changing experience both for the patient and their family. The impact is profound, especially the first time," Kate said in July during a visit to Colchester Hospital in Essex.

Jessie J has also been candid about her own breast cancer journey. In June, she confirmed via Instagram that her cancer was completely removed following a mastectomy and breast reconstruction. On This Morning, she gave a health update, noting she is recovering well and describing her experience as very simple in the best way, since she did not require chemotherapy.

"The positive side is having quality time with my mom, being more present as a parent, and having meaningful conversations with people," she said. Cornish shares her two-year-old son, Sky, with her boyfriend, basketball player Chanan Colman, whom she has been with since 2021.
