MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle was left stunned after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and his wife shared controversial opinions about womens cognitive abilities. On Fridays The 11th Hour, Ruhle showcased a clip from an interview Johnson and his wife Kelly did with Katie Miller last month, where Johnson claimed that women are unable to compartmentalize their thoughts.
During the interview, Johnson stated that men and women think differently, emphasizing that men have the ability to isolate their thoughts into separate mental compartments. Kelly Johnson added a metaphor: Mens brains are like waffles. They can focus on one section at a time and even have a compartment that is empty. So if you ask a man what hes thinking and he says nothing, he truly means it.
Johnson clarified with a humorous aside about men occasionally thinking about the Roman Empire, but reiterated that women, in contrast, cannot shut off their thoughts: Womens brains are like spaghetti. We are constantly thinking, Kelly Johnson said.
After airing the segment, Ruhle reacted with disbelief, invoking a prayer: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Are you kidding me? But this is the Speaker of the House. She added that such statements shed light on concerns voiced by women in Congress, suggesting that Johnsons views may contribute to a sense of being undervalued among female GOP members.
Since becoming speaker in 2023, Johnson has openly linked his perspectives to his personal beliefs, stating: Go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it thats my worldview. Thats what I believe and I make no apologies for it.
