Netflix has publicly defended its new documentary just a day after Sean Diddy Combs representatives labeled it a disgraceful attack. Sean Combs: The Reckoning premiered on December 2 on the streaming service and has already drawn a significant audience.
The documentary features interviews with Diddys former collaborators and industry peers. Combs is currently serving a 50-month prison sentence following his conviction on two charges related to transportation to engage in prostitution.
Diddys team argued that Netflixs production was illegal, but the streaming giant dismissed these claims on December 2, stating, Allegations surrounding Sean Combs: The Reckoning are inaccurate. This project has no connection to any prior discussions with Sean Combs. All footage captured prior to his indictment and arrest was obtained legally. This is not intended as a hit piece or retaliation. Curtis Jackson [50 Cent] serves as an executive producer but holds no creative authority. No participants received payment.
The tension between Diddy and 50 Cent originated from a contract conflict involving Bad Boy artist Mason Mase Durell Betha. Mase sought to exit his Bad Boy deal, and 50 Cent proposed covering the remaining contract obligations while signing Mase to his G-Unit label.
According to director Alexandria Stapleton, all documentary footage was acquired lawfully, and she retains full rights. She emphasized, We took extensive measures to protect the filmmakers anonymity. Sean Combs has documented his life obsessively over the years, often filming himself.
Diddys representatives claim he has collected personal footage since age 19 to narrate his story on his terms. They argue that Netflixs use of this material is both unfair and illegal, issuing a cease and desist letter demanding the streaming service halt distribution.
