Quentin Tarantino has named Ridley Scotts Black Hawk Down as the best movie of the 21st century, praising Scotts direction as beyond extraordinary. The acclaimed director shared his top 10 films in a recent interview on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast (via World of Reel).
Here is Tarantinos top 10 list:
- Black Hawk Down Ridley Scott
- Toy Story 3 Lee Unkrich
- Lost in Translation Sofia Coppola
- Dunkirk Christopher Nolan
- There Will Be Blood Paul Thomas Anderson
- Zodiac David Fincher
- Unstoppable Tony Scott
- Mad Max: Fury Road George Miller
- Shaun of the Dead Edgar Wright
- Midnight in Paris Woody Allen
Reflecting on his top choice, Tarantino said, When I first saw Black Hawk Down, I liked it, but it was so intense it didnt fully resonate with me. Seeing it again later, I realized it is a masterwork. The film sustains a level of intensity for nearly three hours, keeping my heart racing throughout. The direction is simply extraordinary.
He described Toy Story 3 as almost perfect, particularly noting the emotional impact of the films final moments.
Tarantino admitted that he did not immediately appreciate Nolans Dunkirk. Over multiple viewings, however, he came to admire its craftsmanship and intensity, eventually placing it fourth on his list.
He has also revealed his #11 to #20 favorites, which include films like Battle Royale (#11), Big Bad Wolves (#12), Jackass: The Movie (#13), and West Side Story (#20).
Discussing Battle Royale and its similarities to The Hunger Games, Tarantino expressed surprise that the Japanese author never took legal action against Suzanne Collins, stating, They just copied the book. Critics hailed it as original, unaware of the source material.
Tarantino has periodically shared his favorite films over the years. In 2020, he named David Finchers The Social Network as the best film of the 2010s, describing it as hands down the number one.
