In Taylor Sheridans world of television, American life takes center stagefrom the rugged cowboys of Yellowstone to the glamorous oil heiresses of Landman. A key figure behind the scenes connecting these series is Tim Muir, whose hairstyling has become an essential part of storytelling across Sheridans projects.
Muir, the hair department head for Landman, 1883, and 1923, has been collaborating with Sheridan for 15 years, evolving from personal hairstylist to overseeing entire hair departments on films like Wind River and Those Who Wish Me Dead, as well as multiple television series.
When we started Yellowstone, it was a new way of working together. Taylor provides a vision for each character and how everything should look. Hes very involved but also trusts us to execute it, Muir shared from the set of Landmans second season.
The Hair Department Head vs. Hair Designer
As a hair designer, Muir collaborates with production, costume, and makeup teams to conceptualize characters hair, creating storyboards for cuts and colors. As department head, he oversees the entire process on set, ensuring continuity from start to finish.
Managing Multiple Shows
Handling multiple series simultaneously is challenging. Each project requires its own mindset, and Im constantly multitasking. Thankfully, my experienced team allows me to delegate and promote from within, giving others the chance to lead their own projects, Muir explained.
Researching for Authenticity
Muirs preparation varies by setting. For contemporary series, he observes real people and local styles. For period dramas, he dives into physical archives and consults with communities directly. For 1923, he researched South African tribal hairstyles from the 1920s, sourcing rare photographic evidence and oral histories.
Creating Character-Specific Styles
Each hairstyle reflects the characters story. Beth from Yellowstone wears structured, face-framing styles that mirror her controlled and calculated nature. Wes Bentleys character always appears polished, while Luke Grimes embodies a wilder, freer aesthetic.
Collaborating with Stars
Muir enjoys working with high-profile actors, adapting styles to fit both character and personality. Demi Moores Texas oil hair required a custom wig, cut and styled to suit her role. Helen Mirrens look in 1923 incorporated period elements while reflecting farm life, and Faith Hills style for 1883 blended natural hair with wig work. Even Harrison Fords rancher appearance received subtle adjustments for authenticity.
Hair as a Central Element in Landman
Hair is a defining aspect of the shows aesthetic. Characters like Ali Larters are styled daily with bold, high-fashion looks, while teen cheerleader Ainsley embodies typical Texas long-haired styles and extensions, emphasizing beauty as a central element of the narrative.
Favorite Hair Products on Set
Muir favors Oribe, Living Proof, Kenra, Color Wow, and The Doux for styling, volume, humidity resistance, and texture. These products allow actors to maintain flexible, dynamic hairstyles despite Texas heat and humidity.
Personal Hair Care Routine
Although Muir is revamping his own hair product line, he continues to use his shampoo, conditioner, and styling products for himself and his family. His routine includes weekly washes and texture-defining mousse to maintain controlled, styled curls.
Personal Projects and Family Focus
This year, Muir is scaling back to focus on personal styling and family moments, after a busy season on Landman. He prioritizes family milestones, including his daughters wedding and his children starting college, emphasizing balance in his professional and personal life.
