Commanders release free agent who could have aided Bengals as season ends

The Cincinnati Bengals may soon have a new option in free agency if they decide to strengthen their roster before the season ends. The Washington Commanders have agreed to release veteran safety Darnell Savage.

Savage, 28, a former first-round draft pick, has previous connections to Bengals defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery. Since joining the NFL in 2019, Savage is now approaching his fourth team.

The Bengals currently show little inclination to rotate the players behind Jordan Battle and Geno Stone. Young players such as Tycen Anderson and Daijahn Anthony have received limited playing time under Al Goldens defensive system, which emphasizes experimenting with different personnel. Bringing in Savage might not drastically change that approach.

However, adding depth during the winter months can be valuable, especially as the team aims for a playoff run. Extra options also provide flexibility heading into the offseason, where improving the safety position will likely be a focus.

Even if the odds are slim, free agents like Savage could still become available in the coming weeks, potentially offering the Bengals strategic choices for both the remainder of the season and the future.
