Report suggests that the ship fire was probably caused by a battery

A significant fire erupted on the cargo vessel Altay while it was being loaded with scrap metal at Albert Dock, Hull on the morning of 27 June. Authorities believe the blaze was probably triggered by an undischarged battery or another ignition source.

The incident forced the closure of nearby streets and businesses as smoke from the fire formed a toxic cloud over the surrounding area. Firefighters battled the flames through the night, finally extinguishing the fire the following morning.

An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) revealed that the scrap cargo contained hazardous materials, such as batteries, oil drums, and oily residues, which created a high fire risk. The cargo had been sourced from multiple suppliers, and the company responsible, The Griffiths Group Limited, had expected that suppliers would remove any combustible items before delivery.

The MAIB reported that The Griffiths Group Limited has ceased operations following the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the ship sustained damage and required repairs.

The investigation emphasized the critical need for thorough cargo inspections and monitoring during loading operations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Fire crews continued their work throughout the night to ensure the fire was fully contained, highlighting the ongoing risks faced during cargo fires in port areas.
