Unfortunate Coaching News Hits Oregon's Dan Lanning During College Football Season

The No. 6 Oregon Ducks, finishing the season with an 11-1 record, closed their regular season with a 26-14 win over in-state rivals, the Washington Huskies. Despite a single loss to No. 2 Indiana, the Ducks are projected by ESPN's FPI to have a 100% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff.

While quarterback Dante Moore has captured most attention, throwing for 2,733 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, Oregons defense has been the true foundation of the team. The Ducks currently rank third nationally in total defense, allowing just 251.6 yards per game, and are ninth in scoring defense, giving up only 14.83 points per contest.

As Oregon positions itself for a deep playoff run, head coach Dan Lanning faces the departure of key staff members. Just a day after offensive coordinator Will Stein accepted the head coaching role at Kentucky, defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is now reportedly in discussions to become the head coach at Cal, according to On3's Pete Nakos.

Lupoi, a former defensive lineman for the Golden Bears, is highly regarded as one of college footballs top recruiters, having played key roles in recruiting stars like Najee Harris, Keenan Allen, Jaylen Waddle, and Matayo Uiagalelei. It remains uncertain whether he will finish the season with the Ducks.
