Boss overcomes teething problems with free bus travel

The early issues with complimentary seasonal bus services across five Berkshire councils have now been resolved, according to a senior executive at the bus operator. Residents in all participating council areas, except Reading, can travel on certain buses without charge on Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

A few passengers in Wokingham were mistakenly charged when the scheme launched last Sunday, but the company has confirmed that refunds will be issued to those affected, stated Reading Buses' CEO Robert Williams.

"We regret the inconvenience, but the overall response last Sunday was very positive, and we anticipate an even higher turnout this weekend," Mr. Williams added.

This Saturday, coordination among the five local authorities will allow the free travel promotion to run simultaneously, making it easier for residents to move around without paying.

"If anyone encounters any problems, they should contact us. We are making extra efforts to ensure that everyone is aware of the offer and to spread the word as widely as possible. Our goal is to have as many people using the bus as possible, reducing car usage," Mr. Williams emphasized.

Some councils, including Bracknell Forest, will also provide free bus travel on Sundays before Christmas. Passengers may need to pay for return trips if their journey extends beyond the participating areas; further details are available on the company's website.

Meanwhile, Reading Borough Council continues its 2.50 offer for the Mereoak Park and Ride 600, Winnersh Park and Ride 500, and Hospital Park & Ride 300 services daily, covering parking (except at Thames Valley) and return travel.
