A 28-year-old man is now in custody in Clemson, South Carolina, following a violent midday road rage incident in which he fired multiple shots at another vehicle, narrowly missing the driver inside.
The incident occurred just before noon on Wednesday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 76 and Old Stone Church Road. Witnesses quickly called 911 as the sounds of gunfire disrupted the usual flow of traffic.
According to police reports, a motorist driving north on U.S. 76 was cut off by a gray sedan. After honking in frustration, the sedans driver reportedly stopped in the median. The first driver continued toward a red light, but the situation escalated when shots were fired, shattering his windshield with multiple bullet holes.
The shooters vehicle then followed the victim briefly before speeding away south on Pendleton Road. The unharmed driver managed to note the cars license plate and description before contacting authorities at a nearby gas station.
Law enforcement quickly located the suspects vehicle. Anderson County deputies intercepted the car on SC Highway 187 near I-85. The driver, identified as Charles Douglas Mace Jr., a local resident of Anderson County, was taken into custody.
A search of Maces vehicle revealed an AR-style firearm illegally modified to fire like a machine gun, equipped with a shell catcher to avoid leaving evidence at the scene.
Authorities issued warrants against Mace for attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of an illegal machine gun. He remains in the Clemson jail while investigators continue to review the case and assess the potential severity of the incident.
All individuals involved are considered innocent until proven guilty.
