A woman shared on Reddit that she has been in a relationship for just over a year, but she is struggling with her boyfriend and his friends extreme frankness. She described them as brutally honest, a trait that often crosses into what feels like public humiliation rather than constructive feedback.
The 26-year-old explained that when she began dating her 27-year-old boyfriend, he warned her that his friend group was brutally honest, which she initially interpreted as playful teasing. However, she quickly realized it was far more intense. According to her, the group has a practice where anyone who mentions an issue with their partner makes that partner open to collective critique. I didnt truly understand it until last weekend, she admitted.
During a gathering with his friends, one of them casually asked, So, did you ever fix that thing where you cry every time a plan changes? The woman recalled that everyone laughed and then proceeded to point out various perceived flaws. They said things like, You apologize too much, it seems manipulative, You act shy but actually like control, and You talk about your job too much; it bores the rest of us, all framed as helpful advice.
Her boyfriend participated in the discussion, nodding along and occasionally adding his own comments. She described the experience as feeling like I was in a live Yelp review of my personality. When she later expressed her upset, he dismissed her feelings as drama and insisted she should be grateful for their honesty.
Now, she is questioning whether her discomfort is justified or if she simply needs to develop a thicker skin. She asked Reddit: Is this genuinely healthy communication that I cant handle, or is this a group that takes pleasure in tearing others down under the guise of self-improvement?
The majority of Reddit users supported her concerns, suggesting that the behavior was inappropriate and that she should reconsider the relationship. Comments included:
- Complaining to his friends and having them gang up on you is not radical honesty. He's crowdsourcing his bullying. Gross.
- Not radical honesty, this is public shaming. Hes prioritizing his friends over your feelings, and thats a red flag .
- Honesty without kindness is cruelty.
