Abu Shabab's second-in-command speaks after being appointed: 'I have no fear of Hamas'

Ghassan al-Duhaini, newly appointed leader of the Abu Shabab faction in southern Gaza, stated in an interview with N12 News that his fighters will intensify operations against Hamas. According to him, there is no reason to fear an organization he is actively battling.

Why should I fear Hamas when our mission is to oppose them? al-Duhaini said. We detain their operatives, seize their equipment, push them back, and act on behalf of civilians and all free people.

A video showing al-Duhaini meeting with his forces circulated on Telegram shortly after his appointment. He explained that the recording was released to demonstrate that the group remains fully active. The goal was clear: to show our readiness and morale. The fighters are alert, organized, and prepared, he noted.

Al-Duhaini assumed leadership following the death of former commander Yasser Abu Shabab, 32, who was fatally injured during clashes between armed factions. Reports indicate his death resulted from an internal dispute rather than Hamas fire. Al-Duhaini was also wounded in the same incident.

Despite the loss, the new leader asserted that operations will not slow. His absence is difficult, but it will not interrupt the mission. We continue with the same force, and with even greater resolve, he emphasized.

N12 reports that al-Duhaini is 39 years old and, like his predecessor, comes from the Bedouin al-Tarabin tribe. He previously served as the militias military chief and is considered one of Hamass most targeted opponents. He was once affiliated with a Gaza-based extremist network linked to al-Qaeda and has been detained by Hamas in the past.

Al-Duhaini added that the goal now is to remove Hamas from the southern region and secure conditions for civilians. We will open space for people to live safely, move the confrontation to areas held only by armed units, and create a zone free of weapons. Many civilians seek normal life and peace, and we aim to provide a protected environment for them.
