In a striking act of civil disobedience, a group of activists in London took responsibility for leaving large amounts of horse manure in the lobby of The Ritz London. A video circulating online shows three individuals unloading substantial bags beneath the hotels festive Christmas tree.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers responded to a report of criminal damage at a hotel in Piccadilly, Mayfair, but no arrests have been made so far.
The protest, organized by Take Back Action, a self-described nonviolent civil-resistance group, occurred around noon on Wednesday, Dec. 3. According to the group, the three activists placed the manure directly under the iconic Christmas tree.
Footage shared by Take Back Action shows the protestors wheeling three suitcases into the lobby. Upon reaching the tree, they unzipped the luggage to reveal plastic bags filled with manure. Hotel staff quickly intervened, and the video captures two employees removing the activists from the lobby.
After being escorted out, the protestors held signs outside the hotel with messages reading INEQUALITY IS S--- and TAX THE RICH.
In an official statement, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, noting that officers found horse manure in the lobby and that the investigation is ongoing.
Take Back Action stated that the demonstration aimed to push for the creation of a permanent citizens assembly in the U.K., referred to as a House of the People, which would have the authority to tax extreme wealth and address societal inequalities.
Ellen Redwood-Brown, a 23-year-old healthcare worker involved in the protest, explained, The billionaires, corporations, and corrupt politicians running Britain dont care about us. While working in the NHS, Ive seen patients suffer because doctors are overworked.
Another participant, 65-year-old former doctor and journalist Tom Barber, commented, Power is concentrated in the hands of a small, extremely wealthy elite who continue to widen the gap between the rich and the rest of society.
The protest video posted on social media received mixed reactions. Some users criticized the demonstration, calling it vandalism and questioning whether it would gain public sympathy despite the activists message.
The Ritz London has not issued an immediate response regarding the incident.
