'We must stay united': Top EU diplomat supports partnership with US

On Saturday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the importance of maintaining the longstanding partnership between Europe and the United States. Her remarks came in response to a recent US national strategy that raised doubts about Europe's reliability.

"While some criticisms have merit, Europe has at times underestimated its own influence, particularly regarding Russia," Kallas stated at a diplomatic event in Doha. "We need to be more self-assured, but the US remains our primary ally," she added during the Doha Forum.

The newly released US national security strategy, published earlier this week, warns that Europe faces significant challenges from migration and suggests potential threats to freedom of expression across the continent.

"We may not always align on every issue, but the core principle of our alliance remains intact. We are strong partners, and unity is essential," Kallas affirmed.

Issued by the White House on Thursday, the document reflects President Donald Trump's "America First" policy while sharply critiquing European institutions. It highlights concerns such as the influence of transnational organizations, migration policies, declining birth rates, restrictions on free speech, and erosion of national identities and confidence.

Trump described the strategy as a "plan to ensure America remains the most successful nation in history." Meanwhile, the EU has expressed apprehension that new US efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict could lead to an agreement that compromises European security.
