Roof slates to be laid painted as part of repairs

Residents are being encouraged to showcase their creativity by participating in a special roof restoration project valued at 7 million. The work is focused on Kettering Library and Art Gallery, also known as Cornerstone, which sustained damage during severe rainfall in Northamptonshire in 2023.

Restoration efforts began in March, with the first locally sourced Collyweston slate tiles installed in October. As part of the project, a special event called Tag-A-Tile will see 121 slates painted by participants before being installed face-down on the roof, becoming a lasting part of the towns architectural heritage.

The number of tiles represents the years since the library first opened. Painting will take place at the Parish Hall on Ketterings Market Place from 10:00 to 15:00 GMT, coinciding with the towns Christmas Market. Participants can decorate their tiles freely, whether by writing their names, doodles, or personal messages. Although the artwork will be hidden once installed, each contributor will be able to identify their tile and show it to friends and family.

Each tile, approximately postcard-sized, will be numbered and the artists name recorded. Photographs of all painted tiles will later be displayed in an exhibition at the Alfred East Gallery.

The restoration work is intended to safeguard the Grade II listed building for future generations. The gallery and museum remain closed while the library operates from a new wing. Completion of the roof repairs is expected by August 2026, with damaged slates replaced with Collyweston slate from Northamptonshire.
