A physician found guilty of providing Matthew Perry with ketamine, a drug that contributed to the late actors overdose, has been sentenced to 30 months behind bars. U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett announced the ruling on Wednesday following Salvador Plasencias guilty plea. Plasencia admitted to supplying Perry with 20 vials of ketamine over a two-week period shortly before the actors death, sometimes visiting Perrys residence to administer the drug himself.
In addition to the prison sentence, Plasencia will serve two years of supervised release and is required to pay a fine of $5,600.
Plasencia, a former owner of a Malibu, California urgent care clinic, is one of five individuals who pleaded guilty in connection with Perrys accidental death, which was attributed to the acute effects of ketamine. He is the first among them to be sentenced. Perry was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home in 2023 after struggling with increasing dependence on the drug.
Had the case gone to trial, Plasencia faced a potential sentence of up to 40 years. Prosecutors had recommended a three-year term, citing that the doctor exploited Perrys long-standing addiction rather than acting in his best interest. Court documents highlighted that Plasencia continued supplying ketamine despite knowing the actors assistant was administering it without proper medical oversight and that Perry had previously experienced adverse reactions.
Plasencias defense argued that his role was limited and that he did not act with full awareness of the consequences. His lawyer stated, Plasencia made serious errors in his treatment decisions regarding the off-label use of ketamine, a medication often used for depression but lacking standardized protocols. The decisions over the 13 days he treated Mr. Perry will remain with him forever.
In statements to the court, Perrys family described Plasencia as the most culpable in the actors death. They accused him of secretly violating his professional obligations and deliberately undermining Matthews recovery. Perrys stepmother emphasized, Matthews recovery counted on you saying NO.
Federal prosecutors had previously filed criminal charges against Plasencia, documenting instances in which Perrys vital signs became dangerously elevated after ketamine administration. Despite the risks, Plasencia reportedly encouraged further doses through messages to Perrys assistant, showing disregard for the actors safety.
Other individuals involved in providing Perry with ketamine, including Jasveen Sangha, known as the Ketamine Queen, face pending sentencing in the coming months.
