During his tenure as a judge on American Idol, Simon Cowell worked closely with host Ryan Seacrest. Cowell served as a judge while Seacrest helmed the show from its debut in 2002 until Cowell's departure in 2010. Seacrest continued to host the ABC revival starting in 2018, although without the on-screen exchanges he shared with Cowell.
Despite their past collaboration, the two have not maintained regular contact. When asked about Seacrest's extensive presence across television, including hosting Wheel of Fortune and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve, Cowell admitted he couldnt fully explain it. "I can't really answer that one," Cowell told the New York Times. "He does work hard."
The interviewer noted that many people work hard. Cowell added, "He was very, very ambitious. I didn't follow his career, so I don't know what he's done. We rarely talk now. He was very determined about his career wanting to be famous. A huge drive to achieve fame."
Like Seacrest, Cowell has remained visible in the public eye, judging on shows like The X Factor and America's Got Talent. He explained to Hollywood Life in 2019 that his exit from Idol was influenced by the age restrictions for contestants, which were 16 to 28 for most of his time on the show. "How can you say, 'You can't be a star?'" Cowell said. "I found the term 'idol' irritating. Why isnt a 35-year-old as impressive as an 18-year-old? It stopped feeling real, which is why I moved on."
Cowell mentioned that he still keeps in touch with some of the artists he met on American Idol. "I still enjoy the show, and I was fortunate to share key moments with artists I remain close to today," he said. "We are still very good friends, talk often, and spend time together. Those were the good years!"
His newest project, Simon Cowell: The Next Act, follows him as he forms a boy band and will premiere on Netflix on December 10.
