The attempt to overturn the council's approval for a housing project on the site of the former Bristol Zoo Gardens has been rejected by the courts. The Save Bristol Gardens Alliance (SBGA) had sought a judicial review but the judge concluded that Bristol City Council acted correctly when granting permission for 196 new homes.
Approval for the redevelopment in Clifton was granted in April 2023. The Bristol Zoological Society has reported that recent legal disputes have cost the organization over 300,000 and led to 20 job losses.
An SBGA representative expressed disappointment, noting that the judicial review had been pursued "reluctantly." The group emphasized that opposition to the housing project will continue, stating that proper consultation by the Zoological Society could have prevented the legal battle and environmental concerns.
The proposed development was temporarily halted in August 2024 when SBGA filed the legal challenge against the councils decision.
Dr. Justin Morris, Chief Executive of Bristol Zoological Society, welcomed the ruling but highlighted the strain caused by legal proceedings. He explained that delays in selling the zoo gardens had hindered the charity's access to crucial funds, affecting its conservation and educational programs.
"Responding to legal challenges has cost us more than 300,000funds that could have supported conservation efforts," Dr. Morris said. "We have had to make significant budget cuts and reduce staffing as a result."
He added that the society hopes the courts decision will allow them to focus on protecting endangered species and continuing their conservation work without further disruption.
