Former President Donald Trump described Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Somali immigrants as garbage in a heated Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, December 2. He suggested that some should return to their countries while discussing immigration and the Somali community in Minnesota.
During the session, Trump stated, I dont want them in our country. Somebody might call this politically incorrect, but I dont care. I dont want them here. He continued, Their country has problems for a reason. Their country stinks, and we dont want them in our nation, also noting he could make similar remarks about other nations.
Trump warned that the U.S. was at a tipping point and could go the wrong way if we continue accepting garbage into our country.
The remarks coincided with reports by The New York Times detailing a federal fraud investigation in Minnesota. Dozens have been charged in connection with an alleged scheme that misappropriated federal funds meant for children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prosecutors say the alleged fraud involved members of the states Somali community, with more than $1 billion reportedly misused over five years.
A senior law enforcement official indicated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is planning operations in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, but stressed they are not specifically targeting the Somali population. Arrests could occur if immigration laws are violated.
Trump also criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar directly, claiming, Ilhan Omar is garbage. Her friends are garbage. They do not contribute; they complain. If they come from difficult situations and complain instead of improving things, we dont want them here. They should go back and fix their own countries.
In response, Omar posted on X, saying, His obsession with me is disturbing. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs, after highlighting Trumps previous remarks about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the Somali community.
The former president has previously commented on Somali immigration in Minnesota, including criticism of Walz, claiming the state had spent billions supporting Somalia, which he said doesnt function like a proper country.
Many Somali Americans expressed feeling targeted and unfairly stigmatized due to these statements and the fraud allegations, emphasizing that the larger community is hardworking and committed to Minnesota. Filmmaker Abdi Mohamed told The New York Times, A small groups actions have made it easier for others to reject us, while the broader Somali community carries that burden.
