While most NFL teams were on the field for Week 13 of the 2025 season, the Dallas Cowboys were focused on something else entirely. Sunday marked the first practice session in preparation for their Week 14 clash with the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football.
This matchup is crucial for Dallas, as their playoff hopes have been revived following a three-game winning streak, including victories over the previous Super Bowl LIX participants, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Adding to the positive momentum, cornerback Trevon Diggs is set to return to practice, according to the latest injury update.
Trevon Diggs Returns to Practice
After a challenging few weeks, Diggs has begun his 21-day practice window as he works to recover from a knee injury. Earlier in the season, he also suffered a concussion due to a "home accident." While being cleared for practice doesnt guarantee a roster spot for Thursday, owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed confidence that Diggs would play against the Lions.
Even if active, Diggs will likely have a limited role. The coaching staff, led by Brian Schottenheimer, has been cautious with players returning from injuries, meaning he may see restricted snaps. Additionally, Diggs may not immediately resume a starting position in Matt Eberflus defensive scheme, especially considering he was previously benched and is unlikely to be at full strength.
Defensive Adjustments and Depth
The Cowboys defense has improved since the bye week, boosted by the emergence of third-round rookie Shavon Revel Jr., who has made an impressive start to his career. Head coach Eberflus now faces decisions regarding the optimal defensive backfield configuration. Possible setups include:
- DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel Jr., Reddy Steward (Nickel)
- Shavon Revel Jr., Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland (Nickel)
- Trevon Diggs, Caelen Carson, DaRon Bland (Nickel)
- DaRon Bland, Caelen Carson, Reddy Steward (Nickel)
Recent performances suggest Revel Jr. and Bland should remain on the field, with Diggs or Carson complementing them depending on matchups. Despite Diggs return, a full-time starting role seems unlikely at this stage. Nonetheless, his presence strengthens the rosters depth, which is a valuable asset for the Cowboys moving forward.
