LeBron James remarkable streak of scoring at least 10 points in every game has finally ended. On Thursday, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar finished a game with only eight points, marking the first time he scored fewer than 10 points since January 5, 2007, just days after turning 22.
This streak of 1,297 consecutive games is the longest in NBA history, far surpassing Michael Jordans previous record of 866 games. Kevin Durant currently leads active players with 267 consecutive games of double-digit scoring.
James had a tough night shooting, going 4-of-17 against the Toronto Raptors. In a tied game at 120, he had a final opportunity to score but passed the ball to Rui Hachimura, who hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to secure a 123-120 Lakers victory.
The game was notable not only for ending James streak but also because the Lakers were without Luka Doni, who missed the game for the birth of his second child. Austin Reaves stepped up with an outstanding performance, scoring 44 points on 13-of-21 shooting, along with 11 assists and 5 rebounds. James contributed 11 assists and 6 rebounds with no turnovers.
James streak, which exceeded Jordans in 2018, showcased his extraordinary talent, consistency, and durability. From season 5 to 22, he scored in double digits in every game, including eight NBA Finals appearances, without a single game of fewer than 10 points. The streak could have ended with a minor injury, yet James consistently performed at a high level for nearly two decades.
To put the timeline in perspective, January 5, 2007, predates many sports milestones: Peyton Manning had not yet won his first Super Bowl, Barry Bonds hadnt set the all-time home run record, Stephen Curry was a freshman at Davidson, Tim Tebow was playing for Florida, and Novak Djokovic was more than a year away from his first Grand Slam title. Michael Phelps had only six Olympic golds, and Lionel Messi had not yet emerged on the Barcelona roster in the Champions League final.
James remains the NBAs all-time leading scorer with 42,268 points, and while his scoring record is monumental, the streak of consecutive double-digit games may prove even harder to surpass.
