PIT Pirates and SF Giants Connected in Major Trade for Two-Time All-Star Slugger

Recent reports have connected the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants with a potential blockbuster trade for a two-time All-Star who hit 31 home runs in the previous season.

As the MLB hot stove season progresses, numerous trade rumors are circulating, and the Pirates have emerged as a surprising contender. Historically known for their frugal approach, the franchise is reportedly exploring a move to acquire MVP candidate Kyle Schwarber through free agency.

The Giants, under President Buster Posey for his second offseason, are expected to pursue significant roster improvements. After missing the playoffs despite trading for Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers earlier in the 2025 season, San Francisco appears determined to strengthen key positions.

Both National League teams are targeting upgrades at second base this offseason. On Monday, The Athletic reported that Brandon Lowe could be the transformative player they are seeking for the 2026 season.

Brandon Lowe Statistics

  • Batting Average: .256
  • On-Base Percentage: .307
  • Slugging Percentage: .477
  • OPS: .785
  • Home Runs: 31
  • RBIs: 83
  • Runs: 79

The report noted, The Rays have considered trading second baseman Brandon Lowe for years. With Lowe earning $11.5 million in the final year of his contract, a trade now seems plausible.

Lowe, 31, would be an ideal fit for the Pirates, who are searching for left-handed hitters and might find greater success acquiring them via trade than through free agency. Other clubs, including the Athletics and Giants, are also seeking upgrades at second base.

Brandon Lowe has been a cornerstone of the Tampa Bay Rays lineup for the past eight years. Despite occasional injuries, he has consistently been a powerful hitter, posting 39 home runs in 2021 and 31 in the most recent season. Either team would gain a significant offensive boost by adding him to their roster.
