BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 2 Pope Leo XIV called for a transformative shift in the conflict-prone Middle East, advocating for peace over the "horror of war," amid growing concerns over state fragmentation, population displacement, and the uncertain future of the region's Christian communities. His message came at the conclusion of a three-day visit to Lebanon, marking his first official international trip.
During his visit, the pope outlined a vision for the Middle East that emphasized coexistence, dialogue, reconciliation, and fraternity. He encouraged regional leaders and citizens alike to commit to peace, including those currently in conflict. While he avoided naming Israel directly, he stressed the futility of armed struggle and promoted negotiation, mediation, and dialogue as the constructive path forward.
Speaking to journalists aboard his return flight to Rome, Pope Leo XIV expressed optimism that "sustainable peace is achievable," but only if the region abandons cycles of revenge and violence and bridges its divisions. Analysts interpret his neutral approach as a deliberate diplomatic strategy, enabling him to condemn violence from all sides while maintaining credibility as a moral guide and potential mediator.
The pope focused particular attention on Lebanon, home to the Middle Easts largest Christian population. The country represents, in his words, a symbol of freedom, pluralism, and coexistence. Throughout his visit, he engaged with Lebanons top political and religious figures, attended an interfaith gathering, comforted families affected by the 2020 Beirut port explosion, and encouraged young people to remain hopeful despite regional instability.
David Wood, senior Lebanon analyst at the International Crisis Group, noted that the popes visit "sends a powerful message that the Vatican has not abandoned Lebanon," resonating with both Christian and non-Christian communities. The pontiff also urged Lebanese leaders to address domestic crises, including accountability for the port explosion, and to prioritize national interest over individual differences.
Experts acknowledge that while the popes appeal cannot alone resolve Lebanons entrenched sectarian divisions, foreign interference, and social fragmentation, it provides moral support for leaders willing to compromise and softens sectarian barriers by placing all authorities on a shared ethical platform. Continued conflict, forced displacement, and regional reshaping threaten the Christian presence, making the popes advocacy crucial.
By urging Christians to remain courageous and engaged, the pope reinforced Lebanons role as a pluralistic society and highlighted the risk of losing its Christian communities. Analysts say his message also signals to external actors the importance of respecting Lebanons stability amid international pressure and economic decline.
Key moments of the visit included the interfaith prayer gathering and personal meetings with families affected by the port explosion. Nayla Tabbara, co-founder of Adyan, emphasized that the popes presence acknowledged Lebanons suffering and offered hope, strength, and encouragement to remain a "light for the world." She noted that achieving lasting peace requires justice and ethical transformation, particularly after recent regional conflicts such as the 2023 Gaza war.
