In the Zainapora constituency of Jammu and Kashmir, India, a recent hailstorm has caused widespread destruction across apple orchards, affecting 15 villages and jeopardizing local livelihoods, food availability, and market prices. Over 540 hectares of orchard land were damaged, impacting more than 2,000 apple farmers, according to reports from Rising Kashmir.
The Agriculture Production Department confirmed the damage on June 2, 2025, highlighting ongoing support programs for farmers affected by crop loss. Apple cultivation is central to the local economy, sustaining roughly 3.5 million people and contributing around 8% of the regions revenue, approximately 100 billion Indian rupees (about $1.2 billion) annually. Damage to orchards can wipe out a years income for families, creating ripple effects for laborers, market vendors, and transportation workers dependent on the seasonal harvest.
Global climate trends are intensifying such extreme weather events. The Fifth National Climate Assessment notes that shifting weather patterns are disrupting ecosystems worldwide. In China, sudden transitions from heatwaves to heavy rains have destroyed farmland and pushed vegetable prices up by nearly 40%. Spain faces worsening olive shortages due to prolonged droughts, raising olive oil costs each year. In the United States, severe drought is degrading pasturelands, threatening livestock and rural communities.
NASA reports that the global temperature has increased by 2.3F compared to the previous centurys average, suggesting that extreme weather events will become more frequent unless immediate actions are taken to curb warming. In response, the regions Agriculture Production Department has introduced a weather-based crop insurance scheme to provide financial support to farmers, though challenges remain with delayed claims, limited funding, and insufficient resources for orchard restoration.
Communities can help protect harvests and household finances by adopting clean energy, reducing waste, and cutting down on plastics. Eco-friendly initiatives not only mitigate local climate impacts but also contribute to global resilience against extreme weather. By taking proactive measures, residents support both agricultural stability and the well-being of those who rely on these crops for their livelihoods.
