A massive golden statue of a nude Roman gladiator, affectionately nicknamed Golden Balls by locals, has been reinstated in a town after previously being removed following disagreements with the local council. The 30-foot (9-meter) figure, originally created to promote the 2000 hit film Gladiator starring Russell Crowe, was once a well-known landmark outside an antique shop in Wigan.
While adored by some residents, the statue offended others and was taken down at the council's request in October 2022. Now, three years later, the statues owner, Grant Adamson, 60, has returned it to the site to add some festive spirit and draw attention to local businesses.
The council confirmed awareness of the statue's return and stated that they are reviewing whether planning permission is required. Adamson, owner of Grant's Bulldog Forge antique shop, mentioned that the statue could be discreetly dressed in a "toga" or "underpants" if needed to address concerns about nudity.
Its something unusual, a landmark of sorts, Adamson said. Golden Balls can help attract visitors and benefit local commerce. Many local residents reacted positively to the gladiator's comeback. Anne Fowler, 67, commented, Its quite a sight when you approach the road, and its wonderful to have it back. It genuinely makes me smile.
Other locals agreed that the statues nudity was not an issue. One resident noted, Its nice to see artwork out on display. It shouldnt be hidden. Another admirer, who has a clear view from his home, described the statue as beautiful and said it makes the area unique.
Despite the warm reception, Adamson acknowledged some online criticism regarding the statues nudity. He suggested that minor adjustments, like adding a toga or underwear, could address concerns. If Santa Claus is watching, the gladiator would appreciate a new pair of blue underpants for Christmas, he joked.
Adamson also mentioned he anticipates the council may request its removal again, but remains hopeful for a constructive discussion should they reach out.
