Residents and local businesses gathered to admire the very first Christmas tree installed at the Bretton Centre in Peterborough. The tree, standing at 12 feet (3.7 meters), has been adorned with battery-operated lights, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the shopping centre.
The project was spearheaded by Peterborough city councillor Richard Strangward, who highlighted the contributions of local businesses in bringing the holiday display to life.
Rob Brownlee, owner of a nearby fish and chip shop, expressed his delight at the community spirit: "Its heart-warming to witness everyone coming together. People in Bretton are proud of their area, and the tree has brought them joy."
The tree was officially unveiled during a light switch-on ceremony on Monday evening at the centre on Rightwell Way. The event featured Peterborough United's mascot, Peter Burrow, delighting attendees.
Councillor Strangward described the tree as the "heart" of the centre and commented on the success of the event: "The evening was fantastic for Bretton. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have even bigger plans for next year."
Regular visitor Helen Al-sheba described the display as "lovely," while Chantelle Branch from Westwood said it "brings the community together." Gemma Spridgeon, a retail manager at the centre, added: "There is usually a lot of anti-social behaviour around here, so seeing everyone happy and enjoying something positive really makes a difference. Finally, Bretton feels a bit more lively."
The installation of the tree marks a new tradition for the Bretton Centre, aiming to enhance the holiday spirit and foster community engagement.
