GE HealthCare and URMC establish Care Alliance initiative

GE HealthCare and the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) have unveiled a new partnership, dubbed the Care Alliance, designed to enhance healthcare services across URMCs facilities in upstate New York. This initiative, which builds on the organizations' established relationship, will span a period of seven years, aiming to improve several aspects of healthcare delivery.

The main objectives of this collaboration include reducing the strain on URMCs IT systems, biomedical equipment, and healthcare professionals. One of the core goals is the standardization of medical equipment across the health system, ensuring patients receive timely and efficient care.

A key component of the initiative is the expansion of URMCs center of excellence strategy, which is part of its Imaging Sciences department. This strategy focuses on upgrading existing MRI systems and introducing new technologies, such as AI-based applications designed to reduce imaging noise and shorten scan durations. Additionally, GE HealthCares Aurora dual-energy CT scanner, which is capable of single-heartbeat cardiac scans, will be installed as part of this strategy.

The partnership is structured to allow for continuous upgrades of technologies as new innovations become available, minimizing the need for new infrastructure, reducing downtime, and promoting environmental sustainability. The two organizations also plan to advance URMCs radiopharmaceutical and theragnostic programs by acquiring a cyclotron to produce radioisotopes for advanced imaging techniques like PET scans, which will be developed in-house.

This addition is expected to help improve personalized treatment planning, care delivery, and monitoring, working in conjunction with existing imaging technologies such as GE HealthCares Omni Legend PET/CT and Aurora platforms.

The Care Alliance will also focus on standardizing patient monitoring systems across URMCs bedside monitors, telemetry, and central monitoring systems, using GE HealthCares Carescape monitoring solutions. This initiative aims to ensure the right monitoring equipment is available for the right patient at the right time, optimizing alarm systems, data display, and introducing wearable technology when possible during recovery.

Michael Scott, Chair of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at URMC, stated, Our goal is to create a standardized monitoring platform that ensures the right equipment for every patient. We aim to optimize monitoring systems while integrating wearable technology to improve recovery outcomes.

Shane Penzone, Vice President at GE HealthCare, highlighted the importance of URMCs commitment to ongoing improvement and access to cutting-edge technology, calling it a meaningful collaboration. He further added, We are thrilled to collaborate with URMC to shape the future of healthcare through this alliance, combining advancements in AI, precision care, data analytics, and insights to provide more efficient care for the communities they serve.

This collaboration follows a similar long-term agreement between GE HealthCare and UC San Diego Health (UCSD) signed in October 2025, further underscoring GE HealthCares strategy to foster partnerships aimed at improving healthcare services across diverse regions.
