HONG KONG The Hong Kong government announced the creation of an independent commission led by a judge to investigate the recent catastrophic apartment fire and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, according to Chief Executive John Lee on Tuesday.
Lee emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for the disaster, which claimed the lives of at least 151 residents. It is essential to reveal the facts, ensure justice, honor the deceased, and provide solace to the survivors, he said during his weekly media briefing, which focused entirely on the fire.
The fire originated in scaffolding erected for maintenance around the Wang Fuk Court complex and rapidly spread across seven of its eight towers, which housed more than 4,600 people. Many residents have been displaced due to the blaze.
Early investigations are examining why the fire escalated so quickly, overwhelming emergency responders. Officials pointed to strong winds and the use of highly flammable materials during the maintenance work, including foam panels installed over windows and protective netting that should have been fire-resistant. Lee noted that substandard netting had been deliberately mixed with compliant materials to deceive inspections.
Authorities have already detained 14 individuals, including construction company directors and an engineering consultant. Thirteen of them face charges of manslaughter.
