Lee believes South Korean citizens deserve Nobel Prize on martial law anniversary

SEOUL, Dec. 3 (UPI) South Koreas President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday lauded citizens for their peaceful defiance against last years martial law declaration, asserting that the Korean people deserve recognition for showcasing the resilience of their democracy on the global stage.

Marking the first anniversary of what he termed the light revolution, Lee recounted the pivotal events of Dec. 3, 2024, when then-President Yoon Suk Yeol attempted to impose martial law, only to be swiftly blocked by lawmakers and citizens.

It was the first instance in the 21st century where a self-coup occurred in a democracy like ours, Lee stated in a national address from the presidential office. Yet it was also the first time in world history that such an attempt was peacefully halted by unarmed citizens.

The crisis began on the night of Dec. 3, 2024, when Yoon declared emergency martial law, accusing what he called pro-North Korea forces undermining our peoples freedom and happiness. In response, roughly 190 lawmakers convened at the National Assembly in the early hours and voted to nullify the decree, which Yoon later officially revoked during a Cabinet meeting.

Although the episode lasted only about six hours, its repercussions lingered for months, leaving the nation in a leadership void and intensifying political divisions amid ongoing impeachment hearings. Yoon was ultimately removed from office on Apr. 4 after the Supreme Court unanimously upheld his impeachment.

Lee recalled how citizens rushed to the National Assembly, physically blocking armored vehicles and aiding lawmakers in entering the legislative chamber, maintaining a vigil to prevent any further martial law declarations.

I am confident that the Korean people, who peacefully overcame a unique historical crisis, are truly deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, Lee affirmed. He emphasized that this episode allowed South Korea to demonstrate the strength and resilience of its democracy to the world.

In the aftermath of the attempted martial law, mass protests demanding Yoons removal surged. He was impeached on Dec. 14, 2024. Lee highlighted that citizens transformed this tense moment into one of peaceful celebration, using music and dance rather than violence.

To honor the defense of constitutional order, Lee announced plans to designate Dec. 3 as National Sovereignty Day and indicated the governments intention to make it a national holiday.

Legal proceedings against Yoon and others involved in the martial law attempt are ongoing. Former President Yoon faces charges including insurrection, carrying severe potential penalties. Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, along with several former officials including Kim Yong-hyun, Cho Ji-ho, and Lee Sang-min, are also facing trials related to the same events.

Lee stressed that accountability is essential for national progress. Strict punishment of those involved in the coup is just the start, he said. We must build a nation where coups are unimaginable and the light of popular sovereignty cannot be threatened.

He also noted the international attention South Korea has garnered since the crisis, with global leaders expressing admiration for the citizens courage. In an era where democracy faces challenges and global stability is uncertain, the world watches the determination and bravery of our people, Lee concluded. South Korea is currently making history.
