Nancy Astor's impact continues through ongoing trust donations

Over a century after the pioneering politician Nancy Astor established a charitable foundation, her influence continues to benefit her hometown. Astor became the first woman to sit in the House of Commons in 1919, representing Plymouth Sutton.

The Plymouth Astor Trust, set up by Astor and her husband in 1925, has contributed nearly 485,000 to various local initiatives since 2006. Among the recent recipients was Childrens Wishes Plymouth, which received a 1,000 grant during a ceremony at Lady Astors former residence on Plymouth Hoe.

Alice Astor, Lady Astors granddaughter, expressed her delight at seeing numerous local charities receiving support. Craig Lewis of Childrens Wishes Plymouth highlighted the direct impact of donations: We spend 100 on each child, so every contribution goes straight to making a difference.

St Lukes Hospice also benefited with a 1,000 donation. Wayne Marshall from the hospice explained the significance: This translates into vital care for individuals and essential support for their families.

Alice Astor emphasized the original purpose of the funds: supporting the people of Plymouth, and expressed her happiness at witnessing the trusts continued positive effects on the community.

Phil Sanders of the Plymouth Astor Trust reflected on the lasting influence of the Astor family: Quantifying their impact on Plymouth is challenging. They invested in buildings, donated generously, and supported numerous projects. Their legacy is remarkable when examined closely.
